The Data & Graphics Editor reports and produces data-visual content. The incumbent participates in and leads projects to find and tell amazing stories with journalists from across RFE/RL’s Services -- producing everything from responsive graphics to videos, to long-form and interactive special projects. The incumbent, as a designer and developer of interactives and newsroom tools, is responsible for running and maintaining tools, code repositories and hosting workflows. The incumbent may supervise a small team of visual journalists at the Central Newsroom, provide feedback, manage the team’s activities, and set objectives.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Manages the activities of CN’s Digital team of visual journalists, setting objectives and providing feedback.
  • Leads and participates in projects to find and process data, and create unique visual content in collaboration with journalists from across RFE/RL’s Services and coming up with creative new formats and ways of storytelling.
  • Is responsible for  running and maintaining tools, code repositories and hosting workflows, including editorial access control.
  • Serves as role model and mentor to datavisual journalists at all RFE/RL Services, assisting them in their projects and collaborating actively with them on projects.
  • Is ad-interim the point person to guide teams of journalists and developers through the special project process at RFE/RL.
  • Works with English digital team on day-to-day and special digital initiatives and new content delivery strategies.

As pertaining to development and visual work of the team:

  • Manages technical resources required to plan for, develop, deliver, and support frontend solutions to meet organizational needs. Leads preparation for new or changed services, management of the change process and the maintenance of regulatory, legal, and professional standards.
  • Takes responsibility for the design, installation, upgrading, operation, control, maintenance and effective use of technical components and monitors their performance to provide agreed levels of service and data integrity.
  • Schedules and supervises all maintenance and installation work. Ensures that operational problems are identified and resolved.
  • Designs, codes, tests, corrects, and documents programs and scripts from agreed specifications and subsequent iterations, using agreed standards and tools. Collaborates in reviews of specifications, with others as appropriate.
  • The installation, testing, implementation or decommissioning of software, following agreed standards in line with Digital Strategy. The testing of code components, resolution of malfunctions, and recording of results. The reporting of software installed so that configuration management records can be updated.
  • In rotation with others, is delegated to run the newsroom in CN director's absence.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education:

Journalism, international relations or related field MA – Master’s degree or the equivalent in experience  (Mandatory)

Work Experience:

  • Digital media/journalism/communications experience and expertise in a fast-paced organization with tight deadlines. (Mandatory)
  • Front-end development experience (Mandatory)
  • Design and UX experience (Mandatory)
  • Previous experience working in public or non-profit sector environment. 2-5 years (Desirable)
  • Team management experience 2-5 years (Desirable)
  • Experience in organizing, running and evaluating digital initiatives of small and large scale in local and international environment. (Mandatory)
  • Competencies:
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in communication strategies, including communication policies development. (Mandatory)
  • Proficiency in Javascript, HTML, CSS, and libraries (e.g.- D3) related to producing interactives, data, visualizations, and creating newsroom tools.
  • Proficiency in graphic and information design, as well as related programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Affinity Designer.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of journalism, proper use of new and more traditional communications channels, having a solid communication and marketing background. (Mandatory)
  • Networking (Mandatory)
  • Organization & planning skills at a managerial level (Mandatory)
  • Presentation skills (Mandatory)
  • Previous experience working in a multicultural or a multinational environment; or experience living and working abroad (Mandatory)
  • Strong ability to establish contacts, work with and further develop media affiliates network in international environment. Experience in fostering key relationships. (Mandatory)

  • English language: native (Mandatory)
  • Broadcast region languages: working Knowledge Oral+Written (Desirable)
