RFE/RL's mission is to promote democratic values by providing accurate, uncensored news and open debate in countries where a free press is threatened and disinformation is pervasive. RFE/RL reports the facts, undaunted by pressure.

The RFE/RL team is searching for our next Investigative Journalist who initiates, prepares, produces and delivers complex original stories on multiple platforms. The stories covered by the language service go beyond regular reporting of events and come both in the short and long form, dealing with everything from investigative pieces to special reports or unearthing breaking news. Along with other investigative journalists on the team, the incumbent works on complex investigations staying true to RFE/RL mission, adhering to and striving to exceed RFE/RL content quality standards. The Investigative Journalist works closely with other RFE/RL investigative teams, including the central newsroom, multimedia, digital teams, other language services and various departments as needed to create and deliver standout investigations and special reports for the audiences that are having the biggest impact, using social media to further expand RFE/RL’s reach.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Initiate, develop, produce, and edit long-form investigations and special reports, maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • Explore innovative angles for investigative coverage, ensuring relevance to the regional audience and setting examples for exemplary journalism.
  • Work both in the newsroom and in the field on investigative reporting assignments.
  • Conduct interviews in various settings, drawing on specialist knowledge when required for interviews or providing expertise.
  • Moderate, deliver live content, blog, record, contribute online, and capture photos and videos as needed, coordinating staff, sound, and camera crews.
  • Research material and exercise editorial judgment, selecting reliable information from varied reputable sources.
  • Demonstrate excellent news judgment and adhere strictly to RFE/RL editorial standards, taking full editorial responsibility for all content.
  • Meet or exceed RFE/RL standards for output quality, ensuring deadlines are consistently met.
  • Actively participate in program feedback sessions and contribute regularly to program planning with viable coverage ideas.
  • Coordinate planning with other teams, optimizing journalistic resources and capacity.
  • Liaise with RFE/RL departments, language services, and field bureaus for planning and executing investigations and special reports.
  • Take part in local media programs as required, developing contacts for journalistic work and enhancing RFE/RL's reputation.
  • Assist in verifying user-generated content or open-source data and leverage digital evidence for compelling story angles offering unique value to the audience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Combination of education and investigative journalism experience.
  • University degree in Journalism or related field.

Work Experience:

  • Over 5 years of investigative journalism experience in a major news organization, demonstrating a track record of conducting independent investigations.
  • Proven history of successful projects under deadline pressure.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of political, economic, and social situations in Azerbaijan and international affairs.

Competencies:

  • Excellent investigative journalism skills with a history of multimedia investigative projects.
  • Experience in handling open-source reporting and verification, familiarity with command line tools, and basic scripting for data analysis (desirable Python and SQL skills).
  • Proficiency in computer-assisted reporting, multimedia verification, geolocation tools, and information authentication.
  • Ability to produce innovative, cross-platform investigative journalism and storytelling, setting examples of best-practice journalism.
  • Capability to report and write from a network of original sources, delivering both short and long-form pieces consistently.
  • Familiarity with political, economic, and social issues in Azerbaijan, along with regional and international news events.
  • Contributing to maintaining a positive, collegial working environment and understanding the challenges facing the Azerbaijani Service for overall strategic planning.

Languages:

  • English language (spoken and written) - MANDATORY.
  • Azeri, Russian, Turkish - preferred.
